"Speechless -

A Mother's Memoir of Caregiving"

By Kathleen Knapp

Are you a parent or caregiver to a child or adult with special needs?

Do you struggle to find hope in the frustration of daily caregiving challenges?

Sometimes, feeling alone, as if no one understands the trials you face?

Wondering how to cope with the worries and fears?

Meet Benjamin - non-verbal, medically complex, cancer survivor, with autism. He loves Disney movies, music, swimming, riding in the car, and flapping toys.

When a loved one cannot utter speech sounds to communicate, they are speechless but not silent. Our role as caregivers is to give voice to the voiceless.

Meet his mom, Kathleen, who understands the challenges of caring for a child with diverse abilities who needs extra support and may have an uncertain future. She shares her joys, sorrows, and frustrations of caring for a person with a disability.

Kathleen discusses her experiences with diagnosis, hospitals, professionals, behaviours, and joys with vulnerability and humour.

Join her as she leans into her faith to find strength and hope to withstand the tumultuous journey of the special needs world. Using a butterfly analogy, she reveals how she moved from caterpillar to butterfly, discovering a hope only her faith could sustain.

This is the story of her son and her life with him. The caregiving journey. The evolution of grief. The promise of hope.

"This heartfelt story carries you along, and I soaked it all in, rooting for Kathleen and her family all along the way.

The emotional depth, vulnerability, and spiritual journey Kathleen shared in this memoir makes for a very compelling read.

Not only a well-written book, but a valuable resource to readers facing caregiving challenges, grief, identity crises, or spiritual questions."

Reviews of "Speechless"

Becky Meyerson, author of 7+ devotionals,

and self-publishing coach of “FINISH! Your Book” and “Framework”.

Speechless captured my heart from the first words I read. Kathleen beautifully articulates the profound, tender journey of a mother’s heart as she gives speech to her non-verbal son.

You will experience the joys and heartbreaks of this family in this deeply moving true story of a life that speaks volumes about the love and faithfulness of God.”

Dr. Linda Waltersdorf Cobourn - Educator and

Author of "You Are Not Alone: Rest & Refuge for Spousal Caregivers" (2026)

Speechless is a profoundly moving memoir that captures the emotional and spiritual journey of raising a non‑verbal child with honesty, tenderness, and remarkable clarity. Kathleen Knapp writes with a rare blend of vulnerability and strength, inviting readers into the sacred spaces where fear, love, and faith meet. Her storytelling is vivid and unforgettable. Early in the book, she describes her tears “landing on my shirt unhindered like rain rolling down a window pane,” a line that reveals both the fragility and fierce devotion of a mother in crisis.

This memoir is far more than a medical story. It is a faith‑anchored exploration of caregiving, autism, grief, resilience, and the transformative power of a mother’s love. The butterfly metaphor that shapes the book becomes a beautiful lens for understanding growth, loss, and hope — not only in her son’s life, but in her own.

Speechless is a gift to caregivers, mothers, educators, and anyone longing to see God’s faithfulness in the hardest places. A deeply compassionate, unforgettable memoir that speaks straight to the heart.

This is an amazing book. The story of a real mom facing a profoundly difficult situation, facing real fears and grief, and surviving.

Her honest story provides hope for parents raising children who are not Neurotypical. I enjoyed her refreshing candour and I’m amazed at the strength she was given to go through all this. I enjoy her writing style, it’s fresh and easy to read and relatable. I’d really recommend this book to anyone who is facing parenting challenges, raising non-Neurotypical children and facing grief and loss. It’s a beautiful story of Hope and survival.

“Speechless is a deeply moving memoir that beautifully intertwines faith and motherhood. Through Kathleen’s powerfully raw storytelling, readers will feel a profound connection to Kathy, her family, and her precious son Ben.

As you turn the pages you’ll cheer, you’ll laugh, and you’ll weep—as I did.

Walk with Kathy and experience the spectrum of emotions that defines this journey.

Speechless is a testament to resilience, love, and the unwavering hope that faith brings to every step of the journey. Let this book comfort you. Challenge you. And remind you of the unwavering faithfulness of Jesus — even in our seasons of sorrow. A profoundly raw, deeply moving journey—one you will never forget.”
