God Is Our Helper

The task seemed so simple. I’d done this a million times before, but nothing worked

today. I felt frustrated and angry and was in tears. The technology that had always

worked wasn’t working, and I couldn’t figure it out. Exasperated, I had to step away

from the situation, take a deep breath, and seek help.

Later, when I returned to the task with a fresh perspective, more patience, help from

someone else, and using a workaround, I finally completed the task. After hours of

fumbling alone, I succeeded by working with others as a team.

So much of life is like that. Can you relate? We all need help sometimes. Yet, we also

have that streak of independence that insists we do things ourselves and the cockiness that believes we can always succeed because we will it.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber” (Psalms 121: 1-3, ESV).

First, the psalm reflects our need for help and to trust God’s divine care. In verse one,

the psalmist encourages us to look past our problems and seek God and his assistance.

When we feel discouraged, we tend to look down in despair or look around for help, but God is asking us to look up and seek him.

Then, verse two encourages us to see that the Creator of the mountains, heavens, and earth is with us! We are not alone in our trials; our relationship with God comforts and restores us. We need to reach out to him and ask for his help in our circumstances.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NIV).

Last, verse three reassures us that the God of the universe won’t leave us but watches over and protects us. When we build our lives on the firm foundation of our faith in Jesus, God provides secure footing and doesn’t allow us to slip. He never sleeps but watches over us with care.

As Christian believers, God’s promises to Israel are also promises to us. When Moses

requested God’s help leading the Israelites, “The Lord replied, ‘My presence will go with you and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14, NIV).

Sometimes, our impossible problems require us to step away, seek God’s help, and trust him for a solution. Then, with guidance from the Holy Spirit, we can find a solution in God’s timing and with a fresh perspective.

In what ways have you sought God for a solution, and He comforted you?
