“If I’m not dead, you’re not done; greater things are still to come”
Recently, this phrase from a worship song struck me hard. I actually stopped singing - right there, in church, and looked at the words. It was as if God was speaking to me through this song, these words, this moment in time. And I realized God isn’t finished with me yet!
I may feel old and tired some days, but greater things are still to come. As I approach my 60th birthday and feel the aches and pains of sore joints, I get frustrated with looking forward and feeling like I’m not making any progress.
After all, I’m retired now, my kids are grown, I’ve accomplished some of these life milestones. What is next for me to do? I’m enjoying the extra time in my day to pursue some hobbies and activities that I’ve never had time to do, but is that all there is?
“If I’m not dead, you’re not done; greater things are still to come.”
Many great men and women have been successful in their later years. Some have started careers, fulfilled dreams, or continued to be successful in the roles they started when they were young.
Here is a short list of successful people who started after the age of 50!
Harry Bernstein became a published author at age 96; Gladys Burrill - Marathon runner at 92 years old, but she began her marathon running career at the age of 86! Anna Moses AKA “Grandma Moses” who began her painting career at age 78; Peter Roget published the Thesaurus at 73 years old; Harland Sanders founded KFC at 62; Julia Child debuted as a celebrity chef at 51; Ray Kroc founded the McDonald's empire at age 59. And the bible is full of successful leaders who started their ministries later in their lives….Abraham, David, Moses, Joshua and Joseph.
God puts dreams in our heart. Thoughts in our mind. Passion in our spirit.
He spoke to many great biblical characters through their dreams, often giving direction or purpose. (Joel 2:28 “ I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”)
So, what now Lord? What’s next? What dream do you have for me to pursue, calling to follow, goal to accomplish? This is the time to pause, pray, reflect, study, and dream. I know it will be revealed….maybe slowly, maybe in a sudden revelation, but it will be revealed.
“If I’m not dead, you’re not done; greater things are still to come.”
Do you have an unfulfilled dream? Are you wondering where you are going next? Do you sometimes feel like your life is winding down instead of revving up? You are never too old to start something new. You have a purpose, a calling, a mission. Ask God to show you YOUR ‘next steps’. Pray about what’s still on the horizon for YOU to do. Share it with someone today! Put voice to your hopes and dreams! Start dreaming, start planning, start something new or continue with something you’ve started and see where it leads!
“If YOU’RE not dead, HE’S not done; greater things are still to come.”
