Finding Your Identity Again, After Loss...

When we face loss, grief, or changes in circumstances in our lives, we sometimes lose our identity. Our perception of ourselves changes. Who am I now? What is my role since my loss?

The next few blogs are fun exercises that you can use to explore who you are - from your past, your present, and your future. Try playing with your memories.

This poem template is inspired by George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From” poem.

Who Am I?

I am from the old brown rocking chair on the screened-in porch, covered with bright multi-coloured crocheted afghans of soft yarn and the heavy, horsehair pillows from days gone by.

From soft, creamy cheese whiz sandwiches on white bread and bright orange tang juice sipped from tall blue plastic cups.

From the bright yellow floral kitchen with plants hanging in the window, where you can peek from the sheer curtains to watch the neighbours in the driveway and the powder blue living room with framed photos of family on the wall and books neatly piled in bookcases waiting to take us away on adventures.

I am from the weeping willow tree that reaches down to me, caressing my cheek, hiding me from the world outside, providing an escape from reality, whose branches sway in time to the music in my head and whose leaves dance with me as I dream of other worlds where I am a princess in a castle.

From black and white television with only three fuzzy stations and bright shiny tinfoil rabbit ears always wanting someone to touch them so they can come alive from somewhere in Ireland, over there on the farm, and busy city sidewalks.

I am from red hair and freckles who struggle with math; from musicians, singers, dancers, and poets.

I am from storyteller and dreamer. From formal roast beef dinners eaten stiffly at the dining room table and from the hot dog queen who preferred the outdoor barbeque to civility.

From the collision of two world views: the "Musician" and the “Gangster" who fell in love and managed to come together and make a family and from the city mouse and the country mouse; the warm summer nights around a campfire singing folk songs.

I am from the moments between darkness and light; shadows and clouds where sometimes I am not myself but a version I want to be.

From the moments between dreaming and awake when nothing makes sense yet is very clearly sensible.

I am the sum of many parts and the tally of none.

I am me.
