We all know that prayer is essential to our spiritual walk with the Lord, but we often stumble over the technicalities of when, where, and how to pray. Even for people who have been Christians a long time.

We humans make it so much more complicated than it has to be!

Prayer is a conversation with God. He is our Father, our friend, our provider, our comforter, and he wants to be part of our lives.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6 NLT

God is happy to hear from you anytime, anywhere, about anything. Make it part of your day and watch your spiritual life bloom and grow.

When:

  • Anytime! Not just at church or at meal times

  • When God brings someone to mind - say a quick prayer for them wherever you are.

Where:

  • Anywhere!

  • You can talk to God in the shower, while cooking dinner, driving in the car, or when falling asleep at night.

How:

  • Anyway!

  • Prayer is talking to a friend. It doesn’t need to be formal, long, complicated, or done in a specific way.

  • Just be yourself, picture him in the room with you, and have a conversation.

  • You don’t have to close your eyes or kneel, but you can, if you want to.

  • You can pray quietly, or talk out loud (even if you’re by yourself!)

What:

  • Read the psalms aloud; for example, recite Psalm 23 as a prayer.

  • You can use the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-15. It is an excellent example of how we can pray. Jesus taught this format. You can recite it as a prayer, too.

  • Prayer can include praise music, singing, and reading your bible.

  • Tell him about your day, talk about your feelings, thank him for things, and make requests.

You can use a technique called “breath prayers”. When you say a phrase of prayer or scripture as you breathe in, then another phrase or scripture as you breathe out. This can be an excellent way to relax, calm your mind, and curb anxiety. Sometimes I use breath prayers while driving (with my eyes open!).

Prayer:

Breathe in, softly say “Be still and know,” pause. Breathe out, saying, “that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Slowly inhale “Thank you, Lord.” Pause. Exhale gently, “For loving me.”
